May 29, 2005

Today is a beautiful day here in Anchorage. Sunny finally a little wind to keep the bugs away.
Today is also the 26th year since my dad passed away. It is hard to believe he has been gone so long. Growing up with just my dad and brother we were a very close family. We had a lot of great times. Our house wasn't always the cleanest but, boy did we have fun. Dad was always happy and looking for something fun to do with or for his kids. In the winter we went sledding. In the summer we went riding our bikes.
I recently came across a letter my dad sent to me. It was my first year in college.

Excerpt from Letter from Clayton C. Carruthers, Dated November 1976

What I had to do with molding you as a person and a personality; I am proud and happy at the outcome and that God gave me that privilege.

I hope that from your life with me, I have passed along these two things to you.

It is better to be a giver than a taker as there is much to receive by giving. Not only of material gifts but, the gifts of love, kindness, and compassion.

And----
That life requires a whole lot of understanding. There is not book of rules that stand for each situation, but every situation must be analyzed and then understood.
That people were not born hard to get along with;
but that their lives have been influenced by other people, that have made them the way they are these are the people who need love as this is what they have never had and need to learn about love.

Now that little girl Elizabeth is a woman and she must go out into the world and spread her influence.

Good Luck and Much Success; You will always have my

Love,
Dad
